1. Summary

Mr. Juddha Bahadur Gurung is an expert on natural resource management and environment, a senior tourism consultant. Mr. Gurung studied B. Sc. Amrit Science Collage in 1985 (BS 2041) Kathmandu and M.Sc. in zoological science from Tribhuvan University/Nepal in 1988 (BS 2045) Kirtipur Kathmandu later on up-scaled the study on Natural Resource Management and Sustainable Agriculture in Diploma in 1994 and Master Degree in 1995 from University of Life Science (former Agricultural University of Norway), Norway. He worked for the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) during 1992-93 as a Zoologist in a Biodiversity data-based Project. After a Master's degree from the University of Life Science from 1996 to 1999, as a Conservation Officer. Again, National Project coordinator (1999-2003) for Action for Solidarity, Equality, Environment and Development in Asia (ASEED Asia), Kathmandu. Later joined teaching practices in (2003-08) and taught Environmental Health and Zoology in the Institute of Health Science, Purbanchal University, Kathmandu, Nepal.

Further, the Government of Nepal appointed him as the Member Secretary (Chief Executive Officer) of the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) between 2008 and 2013; the statutory organization of Nepal established under the NTNC Act (1982). While in NTNC, his role was instrumental in conceptualizing and materializing the cabinet meeting of the Government of Nepal at Kalapather (5,400 m) on December 4, 2009, the base camp of the highest peak of the world, Mt. Everest.  The global media, like CNN and BBC, broadcast this news to catch the attention of the world for their need to save the Himalaya from climate adversities and indirectly promote tourism in Nepal to the global community. In addition, this event expanded two protected areas, Banke National Park and Gaurishankar Conservation Area, to address the climate change issues. As a conservation leader, his contribution is reflected in tiger conservation.

Again, Mr. Gurung is appointed (11th Oct 2019) as coordinator for the Gandaki Tourism Year 2019-2022 campaign program by the provincial government of Gandaki. He coordinated a 1-week grand sales mission which started from province 5 (Lumbini), Bagmati, and Madesh, and ended in province 1. Further COVID-19 outbreak impact on tourism in Gandaki province evaluation coordinated and coordination for preparation of the Gandaki Tourism Master Plan team coordinator from the Ministry of Industry, Tourism, Forest and Environment.

Mr. Gurung is involved in many social, professional, and development organizations in various capacities.  He is also exposed to Integrated Lake Basin Management through national and global events. Currently, he is the founder and executive member of CODEFUND, providing full-time engagement as Coordinator (Wetlands). He has published several scientific articles on nature conservation, including wildlife, tourism, and has published 7 books about environmental education and science, including curricula based on vernacular Nepali for grades 11 & 12. Many popular articles regarding nature-based and tourism-related issues in Kantipur Daily, Gorkhapatra, The Rising Nepal, Himalayan Post, Himal Khabar Patrika, New Spotlight (fortnightly), Annapurna Post, Samadhan Daily, and Nagarik Daily since 1992.

Editor-in-Chief and coordinator for NNRFC Souvenir Publication: The National Natural Resource and Fiscal Commission (NNRFC) published a souvenir on the occasion of its anniversary. This is a collection of opinions and views from different experts on fiscal federalism and natural resources in the country. The souvenir first edition was published in September 2022, the 2nd edition in Sept. 2023, the 3rd edition in Sept. 2024, and the 4th edition in Sept 2025.
